B&Q price checks revealed
The retailer has price checked 1,748 decorating products against its nearest competitors and says it is cheaper on 1,568 products - equating to 90%.

The prices have been independently checked by a third party as part of the new B&Q campaign, which will be backed by advertising from today.

Revealing their price comparisons against Homebase, B&Q has said that a 10l tin of Dulux White Standard Emulsion Matt costs £15.48 at their stores, a saving of 35% against the Homebase price of £23.99.

Consumers can save 21% on Ronseal Diamond Hard Clear Varnish (750ml), priced £14.98, and 20% on Solvite All Purpose Wallpaper Adhesive (15 rolls) priced £3.58.

Superfresco Snow Kite Wall covering in black (10m) costs £11.98, a saving of 20% against Homebase, and Graham & Brown Drama Midsummer Wall covering in pink (10m) is priced at £16.98, a saving of 15%.

The Dulux Paint Pod machine costs £49.98 at B&Q, a saving of 16%, with Crown Standard Emulsion Matt (2.5l) in Magnolia priced at £13.98, a saving of 12%.

Consumers can save 11% on Nitromors All Strip Mousse Paint & Varnish Remover (400ml), which costs £7.48, compared to the Homebase price of £8.48, says B&Q.

B&Q's marketing director Warren Scarr said: "At a time when our customers are springing into action to start their new DIY projects, yet budgets are still tight, we want them to know that our price promise packs a punch and they really can decorate for less at B&Q."

I find B&Q staff to be unhelpful and certainly products are of a poorer quality than that of Homebase in particular plant quality. I've noticed that in my area there is no difference in price, no idea what B&Q are basing this on.

Accept this is a valid marketing strategy and also support your view in your words that 'B&Q are the Cheapest DIY retailer' a statement that maybe your shop floor staff -past and present- will also agree with.

Wouldn't it be refreshing for someone to accept that this is a valid marketting strategy to show customers (the majority of whom visit us for their standard DIY products) that B&Q are the cheapest DIY retailer?

This means we get more customers through the door to buy those new & different products that B&Q DO offer.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if companies like B&Q began to concentrate on offering something different instead of looking over their shoulders at competitors. We might then begin to see new companies with new products coming through.
