Research suggests Cyber Monday spending will be bigger than last year

Published: 28 November 2016 - Jenny Wonnacott

New research from BHS.com reveals that 14% of people plan to spend more during Cyber Monday this year (28th November) than they did in 2015, and just 5% expect to spend less.

BHS.com has a number of offers for Cyber Monday including 50% off all hampers; 25% off all gifts; 60% off freshwash bedding; 50% off bedding sets; 50% off Royal Doulton glassware and up to 40% off all women’s fashion. It will also be offering free deliveries for items bought between Monday 28th November and Wednesday 30th November.

The newly-formed online retailer had a strong Black Friday. The value of sales between Monday 21st November and Friday 25th November was 232% higher than the same five days the previous week. The value of sales on Black Friday itself was 239% higher than the previous Friday.

The younger age groups are likely to see the biggest increase in spending on Cyber Monday, as 36% of those aged 18 – 24 plan to spend more on this day, compared to 5% who think they will spend less. The corresponding figures for those aged 25 – 34 are 21% and 7%, but for those aged 55 – 64 they are 6% and 4%.

Of the 6.9 million people planning to spend more, 1.9 million expect their increased expenditure to be at least £100. Some 241,000 people plan to spend at least £500 more.

On a regional basis, 20% of people in the East of England plan to spend more during Cyber Monday compared to 4% who plan to spend less, and this is followed by London where the corresponding figures are 19% and 6%.

BHS.com managing director David Anderson said: “As an online retailer in the UK, Cyber Monday is an important time of the year for us. Last year, the nation spent £968 million in sales during Cyber Monday, a rise of 34% on 2014 and our research suggests that this year could see further growth.”

In September, BHS relaunched in the UK as an online retailer, and since then it has rolled out a number of lines to build momentum in the UK retail market. It currently offers lighting, kitchen dining, bedroom and bathroom ranges, and also a selection of men’s and women’s clothing. Over 60% of its customer purchases are now made on mobile devices.
