Wyevale to stop selling 'eco-unfriendly' lines

Chain to start pushing green credentials
Wyevale is to stop selling environmentally unfriendly gas-powered outdoor patio heaters.

The garden centre chain said it would not stock "eco-unfriendly" heaters and intends to phase out at least 90% of its peat and peat-based growing products within the next three years.

Wyevale has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2010 and is reviewing its entire product range to ensure that its carbon footprint is reduced.

Wyevale now hopes to encourage customers to purchase outdoor heaters that do not use unsustainable energy sources.

The announcement follows a review of the business by sustainability adviser Dr Alan Knight since his appointment in February.

Magalogue

In a separate development, Wyevale has commissioned the services of the publishing house John Brown Group to produce its first-ever product 'magalogue'.

The 92-page magalogue showcases the chain’s product range while also packing in gardening advice.

Wyevale has also produced a 20-page mini-magazine, which was inserted in The Mail on Sunday last weekend.

Two and a half million copies were inserted in the April 1 edition of The Mail on Sunday, with further copies being distributed by Wyevale at key gardening events, including the Chelsea Flower Show, throughout the summer.
