Rise in ‘exposing brickwork’ searches reflects recent home DIY boom

Published: 1 September 2020 - Neil Mead

Search data from retailer Glowing Embers, has found a large increase in the number of people putting their DIY skills to the test with people tackling fireplaces in particular.

Throughout lockdown, lots of people have been trying their hand at upgrading the cosmetic appearance of their homes. While some people have kept things simple by putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls, others have been taking on some more challenging tasks, like exposing their fireplaces and creating a real feature in a living room or dining room.

Glowing Embers consulted with a spokesperson Lisa Evans at MyJobQuote, giving safety tips for people who might be unaware of some of the risks associated with exposing brick walls, providing some dos and don'ts for people to follow.

Evans commented: “When you expose the brickwork on a fireplace, you need to make sure you follow health and safety protocols, particularly when you’re working with sharp tools.

“For a standard fireplace, a job would typically take six to eight hours to complete including a full clean up. The type of fireplace and flue system you have in your home will determine how you need to proceed.”

Ensure you are fully protected with the following items for this task:

- Protect your eyes using goggles
- Use a respirator to protect your breathing
- Where gloves to ensure your hands are protected

“Finally, make sure you carefully check the manufacturer’s instructions on the brick sealant before you use it. These instructions will show you the correct quantity of the solution you need and any safety steps you need to take.”

Richard Fewings, spokesman for Glowing Embers commented: “Obviously throughout the last few months people have been at home, looking to improve the aesthetics around them. The recent trends discovered should prove useful for tradespeople in the industry and also for those looking for safety tips.”
