Revealed: The UK cities most obsessed with home improvements

Published: 24 June 2026 - DIY Week

Given the slowdown in house price appreciation and mortgage accessibility continues to be a challenge, an increasing number of property owners are deciding to upgrade their current residences instead of tackling the difficulties of the property market.

In an effort to determine the UK regions where this trend is most prevalent, structural glazing experts, Fluid Glass, conducted an analysis of home improvement search patterns spanning 20 key urban centres, scrutinising search interest for DIY projects, expert tradespeople, and general renovation terms to determine the most active home renovation hotspots across Britain..

Britain's Home Renovation Hotspots

Bristol
With a total of 5,660 renovation searches in the city, The city of Bristol ranks first, achieving 1,144.8 searches per 100,000 residents. It appears that homeowners in Bristol are making significant investments in their properties, whether by undertaking improvements, full-scale renovations, or bringing in professionals. Homeowners in Bristol show 48 per cent greater focus on renovation compared to London residents, London, ranking ninth, registered 780.9 searches per 100,000 residents.

Manchester
Manchester produced 6,490 renovation-related searches, marking the second-highest figure in the research. Even though it had more total searches than Bristol, its bigger population positioned it just shy of the top spot in the rankings.

Birmingham
The study found Birmingham had the highest total search demand, generating 12,710 searches related to renovation. Yet, its greater population size positioned it as third in the overall ranking, with a score of 1,073.8 searches per 100,000 residents.

Newcastle
Newcastle secures the fourth position, generating 3,400 renovation searches and a score of 1,060.5 per 100,000 residents. Even with the smallest population among the top five, residents in Newcastle are exhibiting a significant appetite for home renovation work.

Glasgow
To conclude the top five, Glasgow saw 6,290 searches related to renovation, which translates to 967.2 searches per 100,000 residents. The city showed significant demand for renovation-related searches, which suggests that many residents are deciding to put money into their present homes rather than contemplating a relocation.

Adam Randall, Director at Fluid Glass, commented: “Over the past few years, the housing market has presented growing challenges for property owners, and for many people, the answer isn’t moving, it’s improving. Instead of incurring the expense and unpredictability of moving, homeowners are investing in the properties they already own.

What our research demonstrates is that the demand for property upgrades remains incredibly strong, particularly in cities such as Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. Be it a kitchen upgrade, a property extension, or enhancements that boost a home’s value, homeowners are clearly continuing to see renovation as a worthwhile investment.”
