Mr Hall has worked in horticulture for 38 years, 20 of them in plant buying. They include time at Van Hage and Shoots, and more recently Next and Asda, where in particular he gained experience in added-value products which Squire's is keen to focus on.

Deputy chairman of the 15-strong chain Sarah Squire said: "We are very pleased to appoint Jeremy Hall as group plant buyer. His expertise in horticulture, as well as his retail focus, will ensure that our plant selection is authoritative, targeted and quality-driven."
