Gas Safety Week: Checkatrade Top Tips

Published: 16 September 2020 - Sarah Mead

As we head through Gas Safety Week which started on Monday 14th September, Checkatrade, the UK’s number one website for finding a tradesperson, has shared some top tips for homeowners

  • Have your gas appliance routinely checked to ensure that safety devices are operating efficiently, gases are safely carried outside the home, ventilation tubes are clear of any obstructions and are working effectively, and that appliances are working correctly.
  • Be aware of the signs of unsafe gas appliances; if the flames on the gas hob are yellow or orange and lazy, rather than being a crisp blue flame; dark staining on/around appliances; pilot lights that frequently blow out; increased condensation inside window.
  • Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: headaches, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, dizziness and loss of consciousness.
  • Always make sure your gas engineer has a Gas Safe registration. This is compulsory for gas engineers and will also ensure the job is completed to the highest standard with the lowest stress.

As homeowners gear up for the winter months we have seen a 13% month on month increase for ‘Gas Central Heating Servicing’ searches on our platform. Homeowners can find a certified and Gas Safe registered tradesperson at www.checkatrade.com.
