Wyevale Garden Centres' Percy Thrower's centre in Shrewsbury is poised for its relaunch tomorrow, following a £40m redevelopment.

The state-of-the-art, 98,700sq ft destination garden centre will reopen a stone's throw away from the original site and creates 46 new jobs.

Wyevale describes the new space at the garden centre - named after the UK's first celebrity gardener - as "pioneering", combining, leisure, dining, events and shopping at the largest retail range of any Wyevale garden centre.

There are two eateries: The Botanic Kitchen and the Coffee Ground café serving only roasted, triple-certified coffee. The centre also offers a new interactive events space, The Greenhouse, with advice from horticultural experts, and expanded parking.

The centre has been designed with the approval of the late Percy Thrower's three daughters, who have been involved in the project from the outset.

One of them, Margaret, commented: "It's wonderful to see how my father's legacy is continuing today. We have worked very closely with Wyevale Garden Centres to create a place Dad would be proud of."

Wyevale marketing director Sarah Fuller added: "Percy was a visionary who inspired generations of gardeners, and our goal is to keep that spirit alive and well. We hope that visitors leaving the centre will find it to be a one-stop shop for all things horticultural and leave inspired by Percy's joy of gardening through the unique environment we have created for everyone to enjoy."

Manager of the centre, which was part of Garden & Leisure Group until its purchase by Wyevale, is Chris Bridgeman.

Waitrose is set to build a new supermarket on the site adjacent to the new garden centre.
