Onduline develops Acoustic Rain Simulator to show its roofing sheets are 4x quieter than metal sheeting - on show at Wickes

Published: 13 October 2021 - James Mead

Customers at a number of Wickes stores are being invited to test the acoustic properties of Onduline light weight roofing solutions using a specially created ‘rain machine’.

The Acoustic Rain Simulator has been developed by Technical Manager Ardit Strika and is designed to show that the company’s bituminous sheets are up to four times quieter than metal sheeting, when rain is falling on them.

Ardit and a team from Onduline will be on hand for six demonstration days at selected Wickes stores around London.

Ardit said: “Anyone who has been inside a building with a metal roof when the rain has been pounding down will know it can be thunderously noisy. Often it can be difficult to hear yourself speak.

“While it can be unsettling for people in, say, a factory or sports centre, in settings where animals are being cared for it can be really upsetting, or just plain irritating if it’s a garden office, annexe or other outbuilding.”

Comparative testing commissioned by Onduline has shown that its corrugated sheeting is around 23 decibels quieter than the noise generated from a metal roof.

“While the rain simulator cannot match the stringent controls required for laboratory testing, it will be a robust practical demonstration of the products’ sound dampening qualities,” added Ardit.

Onduline hopes the ‘rain machine’ will interest everyone from professional roofers and other tradespeople to DIY enthusiasts.

While in store, customers will have the opportunity to learn about Onduline’s full range of light weight roofing sheets and shingles, including the compact Easyline system that is perfect for sheds, studios, pet shelters and other garden buildings, and which can be easily fitted into the boot of a typical family car.

As with other Onduline roofing solutions, with each sheet made of 50% to 60% recycled fibres and containing no hazardous substances, it makes it completely safe for people and family pets.

The Acoustic Rain Simulator will be in action from 7.30am to 12noon at the following Wickes stores:  Waltham Cross (11th October), Edmonton (13th), Chadwell Heath (14th), Barking (18th), Cricklewood (20th), and Hangar Lane (21st).
