June rain hammers homewares sales

Published: 23 July 2012
The wettest June on record saw the UK homewares retail market slump 26% compared with May, according to GfK.
Furniture - which includes outdoor furniture, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, home office and living/dining - plummeted by 35%.

However, GfK said it was not all doom and gloom considering the weather. The drop in homewares in June follows two consecutive months of growth.

"The warm weather during week 21 (in late May) meant that outdoor living - worth £27.34m - accounted for 31% of furniture market sales," said GfK.

One homewares retailer who welcomed the downpour, however, was John Lewis. The retailer said the wet weather was partly to thank as sales increased 17.3% year-on-year to £70.3m in the week to 14 July.

"The final week of clearance (sale), coupled with the continuation of the inclement weather, saw customers picking up bargains as a form of retail therapy," said operations director Dino Rocos.
