John Baker resigns from BHETA board

Published: 16 March 2010
BHETA non-executive director John Baker has resigned from the board with immediate effect, but has been co-opted back on until the next agm.

Mr Baker's resignation follows the withdrawal of Wolfcraft from UK operations and is in line with the association's Memorandum and Articles of Association.

However, the other board members have unanimously voted to co-opt Mr Baker back on to the board to continue negotiations over a proposed merger with the BJGF.

Speaking to DIY Week regarding Mr Baker's involvement in the continuing talks with the BJGF, BHETA ceo David French said: "He's been involved in the process from the word go, so having his continued involvement until the natural conclusion of that process was seen as a benefit."

Mr Baker will leave the board at the next agm, which will take place before the end of May. Mr French will also step down at the agm. Charles Harrison will also stand for election as the association president at the same meeting, when current president Andrew Weiss' tenure ends.

I join with the board in expressing thanks to John for his service to the Association and wish him luck for the future.

However isn't it sad that the board did not think there was anybody representing one of the 200 plus member companies that could be co-opted onto the board to replace him. It's even sadder that this was a unanimous decision of the board - is it any wonder that in some quarters it is perceived that the board operates as a clique?

On the basis that John should stay until the natural conclusion of any discussions with the BJGF does this mean that he will be co-opted again after the AGM in May because I can't seriously believe anybody thinks an EGM before the AGM is a good idea.

Perhaps the next suggestion from the Chief Executive will be that he also should stay until the natural conclusion of the discussions with BJGF - whenever that may be.

In fact if he is so desperate to hang on for longer why does he not suggest delaying the AGM (originally meant to be in April) even further? Should I be keeping my diary clear for October and November?
