HTA establishes new Marketing Committee

Published: 15 March 2010
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is establishing a new Marketing Committee, which will meet for the first time in April.
The committee brings together marketers from leading retailers, growers and garden goods suppliers to identify marketing issues and drive promotional activity to encourage greater investment in gardens and gardening by the UK's 25m garden owners.
It has been created following an exploratory meeting held at the end of last year, which identified issues and priorities to be addressed by the new committee.
A key priority is to ensure a more coordinated web presence to provide inspiration and information to gardeners and potential gardeners.
Other priorities include more consumer PR activity, better market information and greater training and merchandising support for garden retailers.
HTA director general David Gwyther said: "This new committee marks an important stage in the development of our industry and recognises the need for a coordinated approach to presenting plants, garden care products and other garden goods to an increasingly marketing savvy and technologically competent consumer."
He added: "We need to engage consumers where they choose to be, which increasingly is online, inspires them to do new things with their outdoor rooms and present solutions to their garden challenges. At the same time we need to remind them that there is a massive network of knowledgeable, specialist garden retailers backed by a supply chain that can help them with all of this."
The new committee will be chaired by HTA president Caroline Owen of Scotsdale Garden Centre. The other committee members are: Adam Wigglesworth of Aylett Nurseries, Adrian Marskell of Bransford Webb Plant Company, Helen Bent of Bents Garden Centre, Jane Lawler of Gardman, Jo Davey of John Woods Nurseries, Keith Nicholson of Westland Horticulture, Nick Richards of Farplants Sales, Paula Parker of Scotts Miracle-Gro and Sally Cornelissen of Burleydam Garden Centre.
