HRG to close HomeStore & More

Published: 12 January 2012
Homebase parent reveals plans to call time on its UK homewares trial format, closing all four HomeStore & More stores by the end of February.
The move will affect 135 employees at the HomeStore & More outlets in Cambridge, Abingdon, Aylesbury and Harlow, as well as those employed at the group's head office in Milton Keynes.

However, a spokesperson for the Home Retail Group told DIY Week that the group hopes to relocate a "good number" of employees at Homebase and Argos stores within the surrounding areas.

Explaining the reason behind the decision to close down the trial format, which was started in 2007, he said that it was, "of its time but didn't progress forward in the way that was hoped and the business moved on. The trial hadn't moved into profitability and we couldn't foresee that it was going to."

He added that Home Retail Group's recent acquisition of Habitat had provided "unexpected opportunities" and, with the ongoing development of key brands, such as Homebase, the parent firm "has moved on and things have changed".

I drove to Harlow today to visit the store (first time in a few months) and was surprised and sad to find it had closed. But there's a lot of competition in the area with similar stores (The Range in particular) but still a shame. It was a store I really liked to shop at and I'll miss it.

Very disappointed the Harlow store has closed. Pretty much the only place locally where good quality homewares could be bought at a reasonable price. I bought a memoryfoam pillow there recently before going into hospital for a neck op - I've been singing its praises so much that others have gone to buy one... only to find no shop! I wonder if management thought to ask customers what they thought of their plans to close?

it was quite sad, like going into Woolworths when it was in it's final days, good luck to any staff members that have lost out due to the closure

WELL! Another blow to an already fragile market. My wife and I thought the Homestore offered a uniqe range of goods and bought loads of stuff from there. It was quite often the first place we looked if we needed anything for our home. We shall miss it.

I'm deeply sorry and upset with the news. I could not believe it. It has not been long since the upstairs had been opened increasing the impressive range of goods at fair prices (that's their motto). Lovely shop which I will miss a great deal.

How sad! I really enjoy the format and the range of goods. What sort of progress were the management hoping for?
