B&Q sells mole repellent in Ireland where moles don't exist

Published: 22 July 2014
A customer found the mole repellent on sale in B&Q's Derry store, despite the fact that moles don't exist in Ireland.

This phenomenon occurred as a result of the last ice age which ended about 7,000 years ago.

During the last ice age, most of Ireland and Britain was covered, but as the ice melted animals moved northwards.

They moved through Europe and into Britain, but did not reach Ireland because the sea level rose too quickly.

As a result, Ireland was left without moles and many other mammals that are found in the UK.

The customer, who did not wish to be named, told the Derry Journal: "I couldn't believe it when I saw it. It's as much to use to people in Derry as an ashtray is on a motorbike.

"Any gardener worth his salt will know that moles do not exist in Ireland and if they think they do then all their dogs are clearly not barking.

"I think I remember this happening a while ago but clearly B&Q haven't learnt their lesson."

A spokesperson for B&Q said they would be removing the mole repellent as a result of the Derry Journal bringing the issue to their attention.

"Whilst County Derry has the Sperrin mountains, we are aware it does not have mole hills!

"In view of this we are removing mole repellent from sale at our Derry store."

The sentence should read
'As a result, Ireland was left without moles and many other mammals that are found in GB'.

Northern Ireland is part of the the UK.

Personally I think this article is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
