UPDATE: 91 jobs go at Solus

Published: 21 May 2014
Sweeping redundancies were announced at Solus this afternoon, less than a week after the garden wholesaler went into administration.
UPDATE: 91 jobs go at Solus
Of the company's 250 employees, 91 working at head office and in operations and the distribution centres located across the country have now lost their jobs.

Solus' troubles mounted with a drop in turnover due to adverse trading conditions and after Scotts Miracle-Gro - Solus' major supplier - terminated its distribution agreement with the company.

Rob Hunt and Tony Barrell of PwC were appointed administrators on Thursday.

In a statement released today, PwC said: "The business' cost structure was no longer in line with the reduced sales volume, and significant losses were being incurred.

"PwC can confirm that having reviewed the ongoing requirements of the business, regrettably there have been 91 job losses.

"The administrators are working closely with employees affected by this decision to ensure they receive the support they need during this difficult time to assist with their claims for redundancy and other compensatory payments.

"All other staff remaining at the company have been briefed, with the administrators working closely with them over the coming weeks as the business continues to operate as normal."

Of the 91 job losses, 24 are at Hunnington, 32 at Droitwich, 16 at West Bromwich, two at Tipton, 13 at Norwich and four at Edinburgh.

"Making redundancies is always difficult," commented Mr Barrell. "However the scale of ongoing losses made this necessary if the business is to continue trading.

"We would like to thank all employees for their support to date. The last few days have been very challenging for them."

He added: "It is encouraging that customers are being supportive, and we have had expressions of interest from a range of parties. Discussions with interested parties are still at an early stage but we remain hopeful of securing a sale."

I was a director of the main transport contractor in Solus. We had a great relationship with Solus until 5 years ago. When we were well and truly shafted by certain transport managers and others higher up in the company in cohoots with another haulage firm. The behaviour of these arseholes at Solus was quite appalling and it was the sort of nonsense you'd expect from a bitter ex wife and not a company. Solus employees were ordered to break all contact with our firm and not even engage with us on a social level and no explanation was ever given. Our business went bust as a result and I nearly ended up homeless. I can only hope the cowardly scumbags behind such disreputable antics never find employment again and end up on the streets. As for the many good employees of Solus. Especially some of the lads at Denewood. I wish you all the very best.

Well said 'Solus Man'. There's a lot of bitter twisted ex Solus staff massively trying to stir and ruin what's left, but the decent people who've gone or those who remain ate suffering.

I can't believe these adults are acting so unprofessionally!!!!

Scott's, you can bag a bargain and there will be a lot of current Solus staff and customers who'd be SO happy to see you as the new owners!

This company is still massively respected and more importantly needed in the industry - we all (including competitors) know it!!!

Scotts are you there, let's see you guys do the business. Solus are a good company despite all the problems they've had. I want for nothing else to keep Gardman and the opposition out !!! The ex colleagues such as AR (national sales) CS (brand management) all done a great job in scaring all the staff to jump, primarily because they were so insecure themselves - well done guys, what goes around comes around. I've lost my job out of all this, I have absolutely no respect for you all who helped take my company down, I worked at Solus for along time and enjoyed it. Previous management have a lot to answer for - that's a definate. Scotts, save what's left of this great company. There's still loads left for you. All very TRUE !!!

totally gutted for all the staff at rackheath , gutted for a very special friend who works there, i can not believe how badly solus has been run for years , the old management team and sales managers never cared about the company, they only cared about lining there own pockets , the amount of times they did deals that made a loss ,turnover is vanity profit is sanity, they should of been fired long before they quit. hopefully they do not re emerge to destroy another good company

Sounds like you can't be bothered shopping around. Solus for many years have treated staff, customers & suppliers dreadfully.Screwing them at every opportunity. Karma has come back to bite them big style. A lot of people will be revelling in the demise of Solus.

Everyone knows the managenment & direction of Solus has been dire in the past few years. Yet still most of these people are still in place. This is where the problem lies. Lots of good workers have lost their jobs because of decisions and the attitude these people. They should have been the first out the door.

Aside from all the unpleasantness bad cultures are bad for your career. Successful people want to work for winners and good cultures drive (and this is proven) long term financial performance. Culture flows from the top and in companies where culture matters, values are posted up around the buildings and understood. In fact the only downside to a good culture is that you won't get famous (or get to be SMART) posting about the company on social media or even DIY Week. Move on everyone. Work for a happy place.

You'd probably be a bit 'hostile' if you'd just lost your job of 20+ years due to dreadful mismanagement of a previously successful and respected company. Most of the comments here are from people with a direct connection to Solus and I don't think you'll find that the industry at large is jumping on any 'name-calling' bandwagon - in fact quite the reverse as there is a lot of sympathy for the workforce and sadness at the failure.

As for the industry being in 'crisis', have you looked out of the window lately? This is one of the best years for the trade for some time! All the more tragic that Solus have failed in the middle of it!
21 May 2014 01:30:00
By sparrow
Regardless of your opinion on Solus generally or what has recently happened, I find it really very upsetting to see how eager everyone is to name-call or join sides.

Our industry is in a state of crisis, we're failing to get new customers into gardening, and we're all too busy telling tales in the school yard.

As a customer, would I want to buy from an industry that seems so hostile? No thanks, but thank goodness TK Maxx seem to offer more and more gardening stuff, at least they're charming!

Moan all you like, but if this is our attitude Solus won't be the last to fail when people stop thinking we have any interest in them. Clearly all too busy treating gardening(!) like its something political.
21 May 2014 01:29:00
By Graham
I agree with previous comments regarding Gibbs Palmer Holdings - the garden centres simply handed business straight over to Solus, overnight - not a single conversation or even a care about the many years Gibbs Palmer H and their staff had worked hard. They all lost their jobs - Garden centres - this putting your eggs in one basket is pathetic, following each other like sheep, quoting the same thing...'we have a 'Gardman shop in shop' etc- where has your imagination gone and independant suppliers - you act like you telfon coated national acccounts until you need help!

Jack M what are you talking about. A perfectly good business was destroyed by a clueless man. He may have been educated but had no clue about the garden centre world. Selling the brands directly to the consumer was doomed to fail. Why did that even need to happen as the brands are available to the consumer in a majority of outlets. Did he not think that by cutting out the middle man he would upset a lot of these loyal customers who had bought in to the like of Yeoman/JB/Adorn etc.

I for one was never going to leave a comment on this or any other website, but after the recent redundancies feel I need to.
A lot of good people, not on a high wage were let go but if kept on would still have worked all the hours to keep Solus afloat. So the decision to keep some of the sales version of mercenaries on who have only worked at companies for a year or 2 and only give a monkeys toss about money and car and don't bring anything to the table. What they bring is the equivalent of offering a lettuce leaf to a family of 6 from Texas at an all you can eat buffet!!

Sadly Jack M..... you are still operating under the same delusions that you did when you held your short term of office at the company. Solus is a WHOLESALER! Not a retailer. There are many loyal customers who operate their own internet businesses, why would you want to compete with them. These are the customers that Solus need to be able provide a service to. The only thing that the recent owner brought to the table was the ability to haemorrhage cash at every turn. I, for one, have seen the Solus name run into the ground in his short tenure at the business and as a customer who has continued to order through Solus for as much as I possibly can, I for one will be taking my business as far away as possible should he come back into the fold. My heart goes out to every single employee there a the moment. The current depleted staff have seen their highly experienced friends and colleagues cast aside with what seems to be very little thought. 91 now have to face weeks of uncertainty as they embark on the redundancy process as individuals. Good Luck to all of them. As for the various senior members of management who have let this happen...SHAME ON YOU!!!

Please stop all of this critism of the owner, he had a fantastic dream for the business and unfortunately was hampered by negativity and ex employees at every turn. His vision for the business to become the best online garden business in the industry would have allowed our brands to reach the consumer. Every other company in the trade supplies directly but for some reason we were not allowed to, surely this is the right of any business to follow their own choices. I hope his plans to renew the business come to fruition and these wonderful brands continue to be available for all.

I don't care about all the comments made regarding our previous management. Ultimately this situation wouldn't have occurred if the previous MD and his management were still involved. ND is the most polished and respected person within the industry who cared for his customers and staff, I'm sure he is feeling sick with all of this as he still has allot of respect and interest in the company he built up. Westland you have the main man in your business, make sure you don't make the same mistake as these foolish people have. I wish he could walk through our door with his backers behind him, I suppose we all wish for things but for me who has worked for this company for over 20 years, it would make my day. Just remember we were the supplier of the year running and that was fully deserved. Good luck ND, we know you were treated like rubbish (completely undeserved and naive ! ) We all respect you and wish you only the best !

I feel really sad for all the hard working staff at Solus, drivers , warehouse staff and sales team. But as an ex Gibbs Palmer holding employee and saw the way the management at the then New Solus took away the business over night and with that the closing of 3 depots and over 200staff and also the way loyal garden centres dropped GP holdings in favour of the bright lights and money from Solus still makes me very sad. I lost my job, and pension as did many others, so sorry Solus what goes around comes around.

This is the same person who put out a note to the press last week after administration was announced that how much pain the family felt. The same person who when it was announced to the management of this business re administration he sat there playing on his mobile phone. It was also the same thing when a senior Scott's President did a presentation in front of Solus staff worried about their jobs - he did not acknowledge staff and continued to play on his phone - total lack of respect to everybody. This is the same person who bragged to ex Solus employees of going to the most expensive restaurant in the world in Copenhagen. Also the same person who phoned an ex Solus employee and told them he was sitting having his lunch in a restaurant in Monaco. Also the same person whilst staff were going through job uncertainty he tells a customer he has just bought a property in Holland Park. If that's the pain he's going through then I feel so sorry for him. He will never know what it is like to go through what us 91 people have just had to go through and what a further 200 will probably have to witness. He will just drive off in his posh car and not give a toss about anybody. Pain, he wouldn't know what the word means !!!

I genuinely hope that "he" whom is solely responsible for this utter shambles is at very least remorseful for the consequences of his actions! His outrageous decisions have caused this devastating situation and I hope he's consumed with guilt... (However I suspect soaking up some rays on a private yacht somewhere is more of an accurate description). Just goes to show all the qualifications on the planet are no substitute for experience. I wouldn't like to have to live with 91 people's lively hoods on my Conscious...but then again, you actually require morals to have a conscious. DISGRACE!

By Who Cares ?
Further to the awful news yesterdays decision by Solus senior management to make 91 people redundant. What a totally despicable way to treat people who have given loyalty and long service to a business that has continually asked for support from their employees and then show those people the door without a thank you or acknowledgement by top brass.
This has been the norm over the last 12 months from a business that continually stated we look after our staff and care for our staff. How many employees have left now who have given more than 15 years service and have been allowed to walk out that business without acknowledgement. Caring, caring Solus - you must be joking - Top Brass ought to be ashamed of themselves !!! Where have they been when people left - nowhere to be seen !!! Scandalous !!!

its very sad to see this happen but what is sadder is they way it has been handled and - cost cutting - i think not!! otherwise middle men should have been first to be cut not Joe blog's workers who have been committed over the years and staff with very little knowledge and very little to bring to the table kept - "faces just did NOT fit - new faces obviously do"
