Spate of thefts at garden centres in St Albans

Published: 28 July 2011
Notcutts and Burston Garden Centre both targeted this month, with camping equipment and plants stolen during break-ins.
Burston Garden Centre on North Orbital Road has been targeted twice by thieves in a two-week period. The latest incident happened between 3.30pm on Friday July 22 and 7am on Monday, July 25, when it is believed offenders forced entry to the site via a fence and stole a number of rose trees.

An earlier break-in occurred between 10pm on Tuesday, July 12 and 7am on Wednesday, July 13 when thieves again gained forced entry via a fence and stole a selection of plants, as well as a wheelbarrow.

Hertfordshore Police are linking the two incidents and actively seeking information to aid their investigation. Meanwhile, a second garden centre in the area, Notcutts in the village of Smallford, has also fallen victim to thieves. It is unknown if the break-in, which took place between 6pm on Wednesday, July 13 and 6am on Thursday, July 14, is connected to the two other incidents.

Thieves are understood to have gained access to the site on Hatfield Road, just a 15-minute drive from Burston Garden Centre, and broken into a storage container, which housed tents and awnings belonging to Notcutts' concession PJ Camping. A number of camping items were taken on this occasion, the value of which have not been revealed.

Police are appealing for witnesses or information about all three incidents, explaining that offenders would have been very conspicuous escaping with the stolen goods, especially the rose trees or some of the larger camping equipment.
