Sainsbury's offers £1.3bn for Argos

Published: 2 February 2016
As had been widely predicted, Sainsbury's went back to Home Retail Group (HRG) this week with a formal offer for the business - effectively Argos.
Sainsbury's offers £1.3bn for Argos
The deal is worth £1.3bn, equal to 161.3p a share, with HRG reportedly turning down a proposal of 150p a share as the two protagonists negotiated throughout last weekend. HRG was said to have been hoping to achieve 170p a share.

The supermarket chain approached HRG towards the end of last year regarding a possible offer but was rejected.

Following the new offer HRG said that while it continued to believe in the prospects for the standalone company it recognised that the offer would prove attractive to its shareholders, and that it would recommend it.

John Walden will get 1.895 Million pay off when the deal goes through, it will be intresting to see how much has been set aside for paying a descent package to all those staff that will be made redundant when the quarter of the store leases that come up in the next few years on top of all the immediate transfers into the sainsburys stores already planed, the new stores have about 10 staff compared with up to 30 in the current stores Iam sure these hard working people will only get basic redundancy, whilst Mr John Waldon and his team of failed ex Best Buys cronies Sloan off with there fortune

As it looks like Argos has now gone to Sainsburys, it's just a formality now to get the greedy shareholders on the board to agree there payoffs. I just hope that the staff that will be made redundant by this takeover are treated differently to what happened at Homebase, fair equal redundancy payments to all not one rate for HQ and one for the shop workers Be fair for once in your life Mr Waldron, before you scamper off back to America
