As
the weather warms up, homeowners start to spend more time outdoors, taking
garden furniture, tools and sports equipment out from sheds and garages. A recent survey by MoneySupermarket has shown
items in a typical garden such as furniture, barbecues, lawnmowers, plants and
shrubs, total a staggering £1,500, with the average
cost a burglary weighing in at a hefty £850.
C
hildren's
toys, bikes and garden tools came top of the list for criminals, with 42% of thefts involving
power tools such as electric drills, planers and saws. Most sheds are supplied with minimal door
security, so it's worth highlighting this to consumers and recommending that
they fit a sturdy padlock that can withstand all weathers. Heavy-duty maximum
strength padlocks (rating 7-10) are highly recommended as they can withstand
the great British weather, even in exposed locations such as homes by the sea.
It's
also important to consider individual items stored within the shed or garage.
Yale has a padlock to suit every purpose, from general usage padlocks with a
strength guide of 1-3 for toolboxes and lockers, to weather-proof heavy duty
padlocks with a 4-6 strength guide and extreme condition padlocks with a 7-10
rating.
Yale's
padlocks are now reduced in price by up to 20%, giving retailers even more
reason to stock a wide range of padlocks for customers to choose from. For
added upsell opportunities, retailers should consider stocking anchors and
cables, which can be looped through bike wheels or lawnmower handles to provide
an extra level of protection if an intruder does manage to gain entry.
By
making householders aware of the high value of the items they store in their
shed, garage and garden, retailers can boost sales of outdoor security products
and help protect homeowners from outdoor theft.
