Oven Pride claim 100% sales increase following 'controversial' ad

Sales of Oven Pride are now the highest they have ever been since the product went on sale in the year 2000, according to the firms managing director.
Oven Pride claim 100% sales increase following 'controversial' ad
To see the advert click below.

The advert has prompted more than 1,000 complaints to HomePride the company behind Oven Pride, as it insinuates that even though men are stupid they can still use the product.

Managing director of HomePride, Matt Stockdale, who is in the USA pitching the brand to Wal-Mart is obviously delighted with the sales.

He said: "We anticipated a big increase in demand but nothing as spectacular as doubling our sales.

"We are working closely with retailers and our distribution network to keep stores stocked.

"The timing of this is perfect, we can demonstrate to Wal-Mart there has been nine years of growth for this category in the UK and the TV advert will drive demand.

"There is nothing like Oven Pride in the states, and with the country affected by the recession this is the perfect time to launch there.

"We hope Wal-Mart will work with us to start an oven cleaning revolution in America."

Oven Pride was invented by Mr Stockdale in his garage in the year 2000, it is now part of the Pride range, which also includes the new Stove Pride, Sink Pride and Shower and Bath Pride.

If this advert was stating that women are stupid but still able to use the product there would be an outrage and worldwide protests!! I think its discusting how people think that it is acceptable to promote sexism towards men but if the advert was the other way around it would be a totally different story wouldn't it!! "jon" i completely agree with you on this one!!

A seventy-one year old (male) retired psychologist and therapist, I agree with the sentiment that people in the UK have become morbidly sensitive to perceived insults. The Oven Pride ad struck me as badly-acted and a bit boring, but I was certainly not offended by it on sex discrimination grounds. My generation is made of tougher stuff. And if it has had positive results for the company that paid for it, then good luck to them!

Wow I am really pleased to see that people have gone for the debate on this one.

Margeting wheez, are you aware that guy can be used as a sexless term to refer to an individual or group? In fact more and more it is used in this way to refer to posters on forums as the sex of the poster is usualy not recorded (and rightly so). If you are going to be bothered by that then you should have called yourself either Mr Marketing wheez or Mrs/ms/miss marketing wheez.

to Chris - maybe the marketing wheez guy is female - now who's being sexist? From 2 sentences don't judge me - I don't have to accept people's opinions just as much as you don't have to accept mine.

& the marketing wheeze guy i think that maybe you should be more open minded with accepting peoples opinions. i only hope that you are just as engaged at helping people who are affected by curable diseases as much as you are passionate at berating other people

I completely agree with Robin on this one i think its people who find this acceptable. if an advert was done like this with the opposite sex being the one taken the brunt of claimed idiocy it would be recieved as sexist and have a far bigger complaints list then 1000 people.
i have to disagree with colin on his claim that there isnt any complaining towards nuts or zoo or the like and thats just plain naive. i think that what this advert is showing is that its important that both sex's be treated in an equal manner and that means if its sexist towards woman then then the same rules apply if its dirogatry towards men plain and simple it should be recognised and not just brushed over the shoulder.
something that i believe to be quite funny out of this is im sure if you were to check the figures of who is actually buying this product then you would more likely then not find it is women who are buying this product so i wonder who uses it back home? & in trut...[comment was too long]

Nice one Robin for stimulating this debate. If sharing opinions and commenting on current affairs = having no life, then we are all guilty.

It's not about being PC, but about equality, which 'MW' does affect our daily lives, but i agree there are always worse things going on around the world.

We as men are living in an increasingly effeminate society due to the success of the feminism which i still believe has a point on certain subjects, equal pay for one, but in many cases the balance has shifted the other way and this advert is an example of this.

Colin, good final point, if they can do it why can't we. However regarding the rest of your post i have to point out that people do complain about Lads mags and as far as i remember always have. A quick google showed this is still the case. The quantity of complaints has even led to questions in Parliament, who we know love to jump on a bandwagon if they see one.

Please explain to me how this addvert is any different from saying:

"So simple even a black person can use it"

As I have said it may be supposed to be light harted but imagine the uproar if this was the other way arround?

To Paraphrase Mark Twain It is the common voice of the people each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. It is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have your duty by yourself and by your country. Hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of'." This is possibly a tad on the weighty side but I think you get the point? Just because there are idiots out there that think ...[comment was too long]

Yes, but the reality is people are far too sensitive, get a life matey, this advert is fun, and sexist. But so what? I'm a man, and I find this advert precisley what it's supposed to be, funny. Wake up Robin (Male or female), PC people like you are what are ruining society. Your type can cause un-rest and wars! Nuts magazine displays women all over their pages, but I don't see many complaining about that. Sex sells, whatever format you use, and the advertising people know this. I agree with you that we should be allowed to target women in the same way, so bring it on, let's have the PC brigade up in arms!

Get a life. Who cares, does it affect your daily life, does it affect your income, your lifestyle. I doubt it. There are thousands of people dying of curable diseases, take up their cause instead.

This increase in sales only highlight that society accepts sexism when it is directed towards men!

All those people that went out and purchased this product after seeing this advert guilty of sexism.

To claim that this advert is acceptable due to an increase in sales is not only wrong but sets a dangerous president.

If this was a product traditionally targeted towards men claiming that even a stupid women can use it then, not only would this advert be removed from out televisions but the company probably be having legal action taken against them.

Sexism is still sexism no excuses.
