John Lewis' home sales flourish, but outdoor living finds life "much tougher"
Workers from the John Lewis at home branches in Poole, Swindon, Croydon and Tunbridge Wells have reason to raise a glass today, as the retailer celebrated another successful week with these four the top performers.
John Lewis' 'at home' branches continue to drive its weekly sales figures
Weekly sales figures showed a 15.3% overall increase across the entire division, with the miserable weather and clearance lines pinpointed as the driving factor behind footfall. Johnlewis.com also saw impressive growth, up 45% on this time last year.
But while the exceptionally wet weather drove customers into some divisions, others suffered from it - with outdoor living reportedly finding "sales much tougher to come by."
John Lewis' buying director for home Paula Nickolds said: "In home, the impact of London 2012 was apparent as sales on official merchandising stepped up significantly, helping gift collections to deliver a remarkable +51% versus last year.
"Clearance, and in particular the special buy package, continued to have a positive effect for home, notably in bath and bed linens where sales were +11%."
She added: "The summer months are likely to require a flexible and reactive approach to trading as the combination of unpredictable weather and a huge influx of tourists could present numerous opportunities. With only two weeks to go until the London 2012 opening ceremonies, I'd encourage all partners to be proactive in helping the business make the most of this unique time ahead."
