DIY and gardening missed out on a jump in sales during June thanks to the miserable weather.

During the month, retail turnover across the UK was up 3.5% compared with the same period last year, according the British Retail Consortium.

BRC director Stephen Robertson credited the royal celebration for the boost but added: "Sadly, the soggy celebrations over the Jubilee weekend itself, which heralded the start of the wettest June on record, were followed by far weaker business for the rest of the month."

Rain throughout the month dampened DIY and gardening sales, said the BRC, with garden furniture, barbecues and gardening equipment slow and products being discounted.
"Big ticket purchases continued to struggle, as consumer confidence about jobs, the economy and finance restrained spending."

Meanwhile, BDO - which tracks non-grocery retailers - reported that the UK high streets "weathered both the economic and meteorological storms lashing the country" in June.
Though it noted that: "The only dip was in homewares sales which plunged 5.8% compared with the same period last year."
