DIY seasonal sales reign triumphant over Jubilee
The DIY market saw a year-on-year sales increase of 4.2% over the Jubilee weekend. That's according to new GfK data, which also revealed mass merchandisers' sales of DIY seasonal products increased by 22.4% over the long Bank holiday.Garden furniture sales were up by a steep 71.5% compared with the same period last year. DIY superstores saw a 3.7% value increase in sales, with significant sales growth of 5.2% in the decorative sector.
The research company put this down to promotions of interior projects to offset the rainy weather, with emulsion paint seeing a 25.6% rise in sales.
GfK TSR account manager Keith Chapman said: "With continued economic uncertainty, the Jubilee was a crucial trading period for the DIY sector. Many consumers made the most of the promotional activity by purchasing emulsion paint, for example, as it is a relatively cheap way to improve a room.
"Whether this brief respite will remain is dependent on how ready consumers feel to invest in DIY activities."
