Monkton Elm GC donates saplings to worthy causes
The Somerset-based garden centre announced in January it was planning to give away thousands of sapling trees to worthy causes around the South West, and this week announced the successful replanting of more than 2,000 of the trees in 31 different projects.

Charity, community groups and schools across the area received the trees in what was Monkton Elm Garden and Pet Centre's third year of running the giveaway.

Plant manger Andrew Pitman said: "[The scheme] has been incredibly popular. It's a great way to start the New Year, so this year we set aside 2,012 small sapling trees to give to worthy causes for schemes they are running in 2012.

"We are delighted to have been able to lend a helping hand to schools, community groups and charities again this year by providing them with saplings that are ideal for hedging or creating small woodland areas."

Beneficiaries included St Joseph's Catholic School in Bridgwater, which is developing a Forest School area in its grounds, and the Woodland Explorers Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit organisation which runs a range of environmental play projects for children and adults.

The group's environmental playworker Louise Kennedy said: "Thanks to the garden centre's kind donation we will be organising a family planting day, where we will plant a hedge to encourage more wildlife to the area. Families can come and learn about their local environment, spend time together engaging in a positive activity and planting for their future."
