As part of the Garden Re-Leaf Day celebrations last week, Monkton Elm Garden and Pet Centre in Somerset hosted a charity quiz, with a grandmother of five winning the random prize draw.

Keen gardener Marlene Matthews said she was surprised to win the prize, and that she and her equally green-fingered husband Brian will be spending the vouchers on some new rose bushes.

Monkton Elm's general manager Norma Moore said: "We would like to congratulate Marlene on her win and I hope she enjoys using the vouchers to spruce up her garden. Entry for the quiz was £1 per person. All the money raised is being donated to Greenfingers."

Staff at the garden centre came to work in fancy dress to mark the day.

Monkton was one of more than 500 garden centres to take part in the first ever Garden Re-Leaf Day on Tuesday, March 13. With the final amount raised for Greenfingers still being tallied up, organisers of the event have praised the efforts of garden centres, suppliers, enthusiasts and celebrities who got involved.

The garden industry spin on Comic Relief was thought up by Boyd Douglas-Davies, ceo of Hillview GCs Ltd. He said: "We've been completely blown away by the country-wide response for the very first Garden Re-Leaf. It has really helped to get people, young and old, interested in their gardens right from the first days of spring.

"The money raised for Greenfingers looks like it will be outstanding. It's a credit to the generosity of everyone who has got involved in one way or another."

Speaking out about the day's success, Greenfingers' director of marketing and fundraising Deborah Skillcorn said: "We were absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed by the support of everyone who participated in Garden Re-Leaf Day.
