Joined by Prince's Foundation ambassador Kirstie Allsop and members of the Waterloo Quarter BID, Prince Charles toured the market stalls and shops before stopping to chat with the Tool Shop director.

Mr Vara told DIY Week: "He was a really nice guy. He said he liked to do a bit of DIY work himself, so he was very interested in the Tool Shop.

"He also stopped to talk to some craftsmen nearby. He's a big fan of craft work and people who make things with their hands."

His visit came a week ahead of the launch of the Foundation's report on the Waterloo trading area, which the charity is carrying out on behalf of the Waterloo Quart BID. It is hoped the findings of the report will help improve trading conditions along the South Bank.

The visit was arranged to correspond with the re-launch of the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment.
