Poundland buys 12 Woolworths stores
Budget retail chain scoops a dozen former Woolworths sites along with more than 100 ex-employees as part of its expansion plans.

Poundland has secured 12 stores from Woolworth's store portfolio and taken on more than 100 of the failed high street chain's former employees.

The all-for-£1 retailer, which said it plans to become 'Britain's next Woolies' has aggressive expansion plans, aiming to open nearly 40 stores in the coming year and creating more than 1,000 new jobs.

Poundland revealed it experienced record sales last year as the recession draws new customers to its stores. The company's executive, Jim McCarthy said he is pleased that Poundland has filled the gap left by Woolworths and proud to have been able to employ 'so many ex-Woolworths staff'.

WHY?
By Teardrops
Cant believe Woolies failed, it was a great store far better than Smiths and Poundland, The Woolies top bosses should be bloody ashamed of themselves allowing over 800 stores and 5 Distribution centres to go down the pan, and of course not forgetting the poor 27,000 staff that lost their jobs, most whom had been loyal and worked there the whole of their working lives,I just dont get it, why was it necessary to close the whole company down? A lot of the stores were high profit makers, it just makes my blood boil that a 100 year old retailer has been allowed to come to an end like this, deloitte (the adminstrators) had no intentions what so ever to rescue this great British institution and instead ripped the stores apart, selling everything they could, and then decide to sell the name to an "Online retailer and not to someone who actually wanted to bring the stores back to the high streets where they belonged, Smiths, Poundland, 99p Stores,The Range and Wilkinso...[comment was too long]
