Artex, Blue Spot, Davenport-Burgess, Gator Finishing Products, Sika and STV International topped the winners list in the annual Best New Product awards at the Totally DIY, Totally Tools and Totally Secure show in London on January 18.


Gator took gold in the decorative product category with the Zip Sander range of moulded foam sanding blocks with an easy-change hook-and-loop system for replacing the sanding surface.

Sika's Mix & Go, gold winner of the DIY category, is a mix-in-the-bag mortar for small repairs - quick, clean and easy to use.

The Blue Spot Pro Series, gold winner in the hardware category, is a range of innovative lighting products using LEDs - practical, effective products in attractive packaging and countertop display units.

Gold winner in the garden category was STV's Tilt'n'Spin Squirrel Repeller: a bird feeder with a battery-powered motor which makes it spin round as soon as a squirrel climbs on and tries to reach the food.

Davenport-Burgess took gold in the security category with the Disney house key range. Children will want the latest Disney character on their keys, creating repeat business for stockists.

Finally, the tool category was won by Artex with the Gyproc Blade Runner: a purpose-designed plasterboard cutter which is quicker and safer than the traditional knife-and-straightedge method - and which delivers a far better cut as well.

The awards, organised by DIY Week, Hardware & Garden Review and Builders Merchants Journal, were judged by a panel of retail and wholesale buyers: Vin Vara of the Tool Shop in London, David Wheelhouse of Wheelhouse DIY in Hounslow, Robert Milliken of Sam's Trade Centre in Harlow and Brian Mills of Timber Mills Mica Hardware in Ayrshire.
