Morrisons wins Christmas sales battle
The firm has emerged as the winner of the festive season price war as Tesco and Marks and Spencer both struggled.

Sainsbury's had what the firm called its best ever Christmas with like-for-like (lfl) sales excluding fuel at 4.5%.

Tesco was still in profit with lfl sales excluding petrol increasing by 2.5% % during the seven weeks to 10 January 2009.

Marks and Spencer was the biggest loser over the festive period with lfl sales falling 7.1%.

Morrisons figures, for the six weeks to January 4, were a delight for ceo Marc Bolland.

He said: "These results confirm the ongoing progress we are making in the delivery of our three year Optimisation Plan, albeit we still have much work to do throughout the business.

"We remain cautious on the outlook for consumer spending and we expect the market to remain challenging. In this environment we believe Morrisons value credentials will serve us and our customers well."
