Makro store closures talks ongoing

Published: 2 March 2009
Makro remains locked in talks with staff and unions over plans to close three stores.
As revealed by diyweek.net last month Makro is currently in consultation over proposals to close three stores in Coventry, Swansea and Wolverhampton.

There's 112 staff based in Swansea, 139 at Coventry and 127 at Wolverhampton a total of 378 staff who could lose their jobs.

Representatives from Makro and the Usdaw retail union met to discuss the business case last week for the stores and are due to meet again this Thursday (5 March) for further talks.

In a joint statement both sides said: "Following constructive talks lasting nearly four hours, a commitment was made to review all viable options regarding the future of the three stores in more detail.

"As well as to ensure all effected staff have the opportunity to share their point of view throughout the consultation period."

Makro, which carries DIY, housewares and furnishing products, is part of the German owned Metro Group.

And they consistently fail to put POS on items in Makro Mail to remind customer of the offer; saw this last week in Reading.
Really basic stuff.

I recently visited the Manchester store with a view to a comparison exercise against Costco. Makro has too many skus poorly stocked and badly presented. The housekeeping is very poor and customer service negligable. Makro has a good name and it is not too late to turn it around. It requires inspirational leadership with a passion for the business and the people within it,and a can do attitude. Know your customer, provide them with great product at a good price backed up with wonderful service, make it easy for them to be a partner in business. It is not rocket science...let me at it...what a wonderful challenge!!!

I worked for Makro for 5 years and was a department shopfloor supervisor then whent on management developement. We always relied on the sales of the CBU customer to bring in the sales annualy however, we were constantly reminded to drive the sales through our top horeca customers. Horeca customers need convenience and quick speedy service which was made difficuilt by the general public achieving an average spend of around 60. Makro will sink due to lack of guidance from the board and poor management decisions. I can't wait for my ex store to close as the store manager was clueless in his approach towards staff and will surely be the downfall of my ex Makro store!!

I worked at Makro as recently as the late 90's/early 00's, and nothing has changed. The company is STILL reliant on Christmas sales alone. Except, it now does so with no central distribution!

The blame lays with the parent company. It took far, far too long for Metro AG to form a coherent business plan when it took over Makro's UK operations. It allowed an incompetent UK executive board to invest tens of millions of pounds in an ill thought out store refurbishment program whilst driving hundreds of talented managers out of the business with an extremely blunt form of fear management.

In truth, Makro UK fitted uneasily within the Metro Cash and Carry business from the beginning. The arrival of a continental management team is too little, too late. Mark my words, more stores will close.

The previous parent, SHV, should have transformed Makro UK into a Wilkinson's/The Range style discount out-of-town department store when they had ...[comment was too long]

Quite right Wayne, I had my card revoked and was literaly turned away when the company I worked for changed its businees address! We had spent thousands in cash at that store since it opened 8 years ago... I was told 'I just needed to re-apply for another card with new documentation and VAT receipts etc' ... Guess What !

At my time with Makro, (6 years late 80s) it was a well known fact that it was only the Christmas sales that put the annual profit and loss account into the black. Being in the red for so long was possibly due to the very tight restrictions on customer selectivity. All to do with VAT reclamation. Staff only shop there due to their 10% concession.(Which has now been removed from Electrical goods). Open your doors to the general public Makro. Just try one store.

Incidentally the car park in those days was comparatively full. It is now less than half the size and half empty.

If Their Customer Sevices were better and they didnt make it so hard to Just walk in and Buy - ie insisting on "You must prove you are a business user they wouldnt be having problems in the First place
