Makro proposes store closures

Published: 11 February 2009
Cash & carry chain Makro, which carries DIY, housewares and furnishing products, has proposed to close three stores. Diyweek.net understands that staff have been informed this morning.
A spokesperson for Makro told diyweek.net: "We can confirm that unfortunately, due to difficult trading times and a need to reduce costs, we have made the tough decision to propose closing three of our UK stores - Swansea, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

"The proposal, which is now subject to consultation with employees and representatives, will affect the 378 staff employed at these stores."

There are 112 staff at Swansea, 139 at Coventry and 127 at Wolverhampton.

Yesterday, Usdaw national officer, Irene Radigan, said of the proposed closures: "We were informed this afternoon that Makro is proposing to close three stores. This will put the jobs of all 378 staff at the sites at risk.

"The closures will follow the statutory 90-day consultation period. We are currently establishing with the company when that consultation is to start. We are seeking to meet with Makro as soon as possible to understand the business case behind the announced closures."

I am not surprised and in fact am a little delighted The service was almost always the worst in the world - and while management shape the service culture, it is the staff who deliver the service so I don't feel much pity for them being made redundant. Furthermore, you treated us like criminals by checking our goods for theft before you let us leave the store!!!(they'd already been checked at checkout!!!)
You all asked for it and should have seen it coming; the customers deserted you because you didn't engender their trust & loyalty. And mark my word - in spite of this opportunity to listen and learn from your ill practices, Makro won't change and I predict at least 6 more units will close within the foreseeable future.

However, I'll miss your shoes and fillet steak

William Cowley clearly has little or no idea what he's talking about. The staff at Swansea are managing a 4m+ stockfile with NO central distribution! Which, by the way, is impossible. A central reason why Makro UK will continue to struggle.

Hardly a cash and carry when you have your retail customers infront of you in the queue at the tills. It was only a matter fo time before the store shut, maybe they'll make some money through the sale of the land & bulidings ???

With 112 staff, no wonder it can't make a profit. Lidl would operate it with a quarter of that number. My impression has always been that the store is badly managed too.

I am not suprised to hear this, as the Makro brand, part of the Metro group has been performing poorly for several years, and with the Metro Group needing to concentrate on the profitable parts of its business the UK part (Makro) will no doubt see severe cuts made to help it perform more profitable.

My husband has had the pleasure of using the Makro stores for about 20 years, both at the Acton site and after we moved to Pembrokeshire, we visit the Swansea store once a month at least. We buy all our Christmas provisions, presents etc from Makro. We are very disappointed to hear that the Swansea store is to close as it will mean a very long journey to Cardiff, which from where we live is about 100 miles each way. I am afraid that if Swansea is closed we will no longer use Makro and I am sure most other people who live this far west will not be able to jusify travelling all the way to Cardiff.
