Lewis's Home Retail acquires two more TJ Hughes stores

Published: 10 August 2011
Retail arm of Benross Group takes on outlets in Widnes and Newcastle for undisclosed sum, following its acquisition of four TJ Hughes stores last week.
The move saves a further 134 jobs, as all TJ Hughes employees in these stores will transfer to Lewis Home Retail Ltd.

The announcement follows new last week that the firm, associated with the Benross Group had bought the TJ Hughes name and four stores, including the flagship outlet on London Road, Liverpool.

The same firm also bought the collapsed department store business Lewis's and has plane to re-establish the name in Liverpool.

Ernst & Young joint administrator Tom Jack said of the latest sale: "We are delighted to have completed another deal, which protects further jobs across the North and brings the total number of jobs saved to 576."

The closure of 22 TJ Hughes stores was announced earlier this week, with the last day of trading set as Sunday, August 14. Administrator Ernst & Young said it continues to seek a sale of the company's remaining business and assets as a going concern, whilst also trading stock through the group's remaining store portfolio.

Why has the T J Hughes store in Sunderland not been taken over? After all Sunderland IS the biggest city between Manchester and Edinburgh yet always seems to be passed over for Newcastle Why?
