Irish DIY stores hope for a bumper St Patrick's Day

Published: 14 March 2012
DIY sales are expected to flourish over the St Patrick's and Mother's Day weekend, says Retail Ireland, the Irish Business and Employer Confederation (IBEC) group that represents the retail sector.
Irish DIY stores hope for a bumper St Patrick's Day
A survey by the Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) revealed that 70% of stores in Dublin will be open on St Patrick's Day, which traditionally marks a holiday in parts of Ireland. Sales of lawnmowers and gardening equipment are expected to pick up dramatically, and with Mother's Day falling the next day, most Irish retailers have been advised to stay open.

Retail Ireland director Stephen Lynam said: "Traditionally, the large crowds in the city centre on the day itself are there for the festivities rather than shopping... Retailers are hoping for a boost after a poor start to 2012.

"DIY and hardware retailers in particular are expecting an increase in sales. This weekend traditionally marks the start of the DIY season."

He added: "The high costs of rents, rates, tax and labour are causing retailers real difficulties and depressing consumer demand... Despite relatively robust sales in November and December, the January sales saw disappointing levels of sales for retailers. This weekend, just as consumers will be hoping for a bargain, it is hoped that Irish retailers' eyes will be smiling too."
