Independents attack burglary vouchers scheme

Published: 9 April 2009
A scheme to give burgled homeowners free vouchers for the big DIY sheds has been attacked by independent retailers.
Independents attack burglary vouchers scheme
The £15m measures announced by home secretary Jacqui Smith this week offer discount vouchers for home security products from B&Q and Focus DIY.

Independents have contacted diyweek.net to say the scheme will hit their trade and is an endorsement of the big sheds over their own business.

They're calling for the vouchers to be valid in any DIY store, especially with the busy Easter trading weekend so close.

One trader is so angry he has decided to accept the vouchers even though he'll not be able to redeem them.

Raymond Day, owner of Hoyland Common DIY in South Yorkshire, said: "I've put a sign in our front window telling people we'll take the vouchers and offer them a further 20% off."

Tony King, owner of Kings DIY in Berkshire also expressed his dismay at the scheme going through the big chains.

Shame about the person getting burgled, but why do the government need to then burgle us of sales....?

I work for one of the independents that will be hurt by this scheme. It seems a little familiar to me, Banks getting bailed out. Maybe this is how they are helping the sheds. Real shame as its us small businesses that offer real value to the customer in these hard times

Another nail in the coffin for the independants. This government hasn't got a clue, backhanders from B&Q + Focus no doubt!

Jacqui Smith / The Government are completley out of order! Doesn't she realise she is affecting sales in every other merchant and diy outlet in Britain. They did it with loft insulation via the energy companies voucher scheme. When are they going to stop interferring or make policies that allow all traders a slice of the cake, and not just the minority national outlets, after all we're all tax payers. Or wont they be content until we are all unemployed or working at B&Q
