Hurrans garden centres gone

Published: 2 February 2009
Garden centre chain Hurrans is the latest retail victim of the economic downturn, as the five-strong group has gone into administration.
Three of its five centres have already closed, but the Banbury and West Hagley centres are still open as Hurrans continues to search for a buyer to take them on as a going concern. The three closed centres will also be sold, but probably not as garden centres.

The chain was put up for sale early last week but went into administration on Wednesday in this, its 100th year of trading.

I worked at hurrans for a few years after they bought it from the hodge family,(langstone garden centre)I think they were overpriced, and in the past few years it went to look very tatty, especially the condition of the shrubs etc.. The competition in the area had a big impact as well,Namely, the superb chepstow garden centre, and the cheap and cheerful Halse's just up the road. What became of my manager at the time,Andy Talbot?

I was so shocked Hurrans has gone, I worked at the Langstone branch for several years, it was one of the best places i've worked, would be good to get in touch with any other ex staff.

Tis a shame that the Hurrans chain has folded - used to work at the Leamington Spa centre til it closed last July. Was a good place to work with a homely atmosphere. What a good history though -just managed the century!

I also have a large amount of vouchers as I was saving for a large purchase, I have read that Norton Garden Centre, Gloucester and Chepstow Garden Centre to honour 40% of the value of the vouchers until the end of April. I hope this is of some help

The Hurrans Garden Centre in Langstone will be greatly missed, especially the friendly staff. My lunchtime haven is no more! It was so handy to have a quiet enjoyable lunch and be able to buy family cards and gifts and well as items for the garden. I hope a buyer is found soon.
