Plans for Edinburgh's Homebase to be demolished and replaced by new student accommodation by September 2016 have been revealed.
Homebase to make way for a £38m student flats complex
Unite Students has purchased the 1.8 acre site in St Leonard's Street and although the project is subject to planning permission the company plans to knock down Homebase and replace it with student housing.

The £38m complex would comprise of a new retail unit and a student common room on the ground floor, with student flats on the upper floors.

It was initially thought that Homebase would be refurbished and flats would be built on top to create a five-storey development.

The scheme has caused a stir among local residents who believe there are already far too many students living in the capital.

The plans are expected to be submitted to the local council by September and Unite Students expects the scheme to be completed in time for the 2016-17 academic year.
