Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

Harveys' 'table and six chairs' ad was misleading

Published: 27 March 2013
The furniture and furnishings retailer Harveys has been taken to task by the ad watchdog for misleading consumers with a sale offer.
Harveys' 'table and six chairs' ad was misleading
The television advertisement featured an image of a dining table and six chairs with the text: 'After event £899' and '8 day sale price £399'. A footnote stated 'Price for Noir & 4 chairs'.

Someone complained to the Advertising Standards Authority that the ad appeared to show that the £399 price was for the table and six chairs, whereas in fact only four chairs were included.

Harveys defended itself by pointing out that the 'Price for Noir & 4 chairs' footnote was held on screen for a substantial time, and said the table was shown with six chairs to demonstrate that it could be extended to accommodate that many.

However, the ASA thought the combination of the image with the £399 price was misleading and said the ad must not be broadcast again in its current form.
