Hardware retailer dies aged 103

Published: 30 July 2012
Jack Yaffe, until January, the UK's oldest retailer, has died aged 103.
He founded Yaffe's hardware store and haberdashers in Prestwich, Lancashire (now Greater Manchester), in 1934.

He was still working in the Yaffe's Household Stores when he reached his 102nd birthday last year. At the time, he told the Manchester Evening News: "I will continue to look after things and say hello to customers. I will never retire."

But, following a bout of ill health, he finally retired on his 103rd birthday in January this year, handing over the reins to his daughter-in-law Evelyn, 70, who had served over four decades as Jack's assistant.
