Garden Centres offered free advice on solar panels

Published: 15 June 2012
Boost growth, save money on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint - those are just some of the benefits Solar Systems says garden centres can enjoy if they install solar panels.
Garden Centres offered free advice on solar panels
Already converted to the solar panel way of business is The Old Railway Garden Centre in Powys, which recently installed 210 panels to drive down energy costs.

Solar Systems, which installs home and business solar panels, is offering free advice to all garden centres who want to do the same. The company's managing director Phil Grabham said: "Smaller, independent garden centres owning their own premises have significant energy costs to manage. Lighting, heating and computers are all necessary for day-to-day business.

"However, they also add to a company's carbon footprint and operational costs. Utilising renewable energy technologies, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels can reduce CO2 emissions, thereby reducing climate change levy and utility bills.

"In addition to this, the current government Feed In Tariff (FIT) would pay for all energy generated, further reducing outgoing costs. With most businesses operating during daylight hours, they can maximise the use of their own generated power."

The team at Solar Systems, which is based in Somerset, is asking garden centres that would like to find out more to give the company a call. It is able to answer queries via email or Twitter as well.

Mr Grabham added: "There has never been a better time to buy solar PV panels. The price of panels has dropped and the Government's 21p FIT gives a financial return on investment of around 10-12%, which is tax free, index-linked and guaranteed for 25 years.

"But we know the Government is going to reduce the FIT and possibly the guarantee period at the end of July (2012). Systems have to be installed and registered to qualify for the 21p and 25-year guarantee before July 31. So customers need to take advantage of the scheme and place their orders now."

He went on to explain the environmental benefits of the technology as well: "Using PV panels promotes companies that wish to have a profile of being 'green' and friendly towards the environment. There are also many awards for businesses promoting their green credentials."
