Dobbies' self-investment rakes in 22% sales increase

Published: 23 August 2012
The garden centre chain has posted full-year results showing sales up from £111.9m to £136.4m for the year ending February 29, 2012.
Dobbies' self-investment rakes in 22% sales increase
Pre-tax profits went up 5.6% to £10.5m during the period, boosted by new store openings in Lisburn, Braehead, Ashford, Livingston, Carlisle, Peterborough and Liverpool. Dobbies' restaurant offering, which makes up a fifth of all sales, largely helped boost turnover over the summer, according to chief executive James Barnes.

He said: "Given the recent weather, there's no surprise that gardeners have been spending less in their gardens this season. However, Dobbies is also renowned as a day-out destination and the feel-good factor of the time off work over the summer holidays has helped families to enjoy days out together - particularly spending time in our restaurants."

Looking ahead, the retailer is planning more major centre openings in the coming year, with locations including East Kilbride, York and, of course, King's Lynn - the site for the first Dobbies and Tesco joint store.

"Moving into this financial year (ending March 2013) Dobbies is continuing to focus on value, improved customer choices and customer loyalty," added Mr Barnes.

"We're currently gearing up for a strong Christmas -one of our key shopping seasons - where customers traditionally enjoy spending time in our centres."

It's about time the staff at Dobbies were listened to.
The company cut lots of hours and then expect the staff to work extra for nothing.
There is no job promotion, I know of 2 people that have run departments in a store and never been given the job they were filling. No money to pay the workers for extra hours but this store took on 2 managers in 2 years at a cost of 50 thousand.
How must the staff feel that lost a quarter of thief income.
It's a matter of if your face fits your in.

Once a family business focusing on quality customer service now simply falling faster than you can imagine due to expensive products and poor management. During economically difficulty times are you really going to spend a fortune on plats and over priced items? Branded the John Lewis of Gardening yet offering value products? Poor direction and mixed marketing. Invested massively in Ecommerce yet latterly closed completely but in all honest why would anyone order a gardening plant online? Crazy.. Then that leaves the once friendly and pleasant staff with huge wage drops, job ,losses and now a very unhappy, unpleasant bunch due in all fairness to how they have been treated.. Dobbies is over this is simply the start of a long and painful death.

Off course profits at Dobbies are up on last year - they performed absolutely rubbish last year! They made 24 people redundant and cut thousands of contracted hours back. So they hurt their own people in order to add more profit to Tesco's back pocket. The company already made 10m in profit every year. How much more does it need? What kind of company hurts its own people simply to add a few more quid in profit? Insanely bad management decisions.

I know people who lost 9 hours per week for providing great customer service and working their tails off for that company. Now you go to a Dobbies and can't find any staff to help you with anything, but they still make increases in profits. It's companies getting away with dirty tricks like this that are ruining the economy. The staff can't afford to shop in the store they work for any longer.

makes me laugh Dobbies profits " up on last year " by 5.6 % But are cutting back on Staff reducing full-time contracts from 37.5 to 30 hrs across the board to save money with the threat of redunancey to save jobs in the long term. Thats how they are making profit !
