Disgruntled Homebase worker: "We're paid less than B&Q"

Published: 3 May 2016
A dissatisfied Homebase employee has approached DIYWeek.net with allegations of unfairness against the retailer.
Disgruntled Homebase worker: 'We're paid less than B&Q'
The anonymous worker revealed that he was in his late 30s, had worked for Homebase for 14 years and was "from a high volume store in the north of England." He called the staffing in Homebase "ridiculous" and revealed he was "close to leaving", though he did admit that some things had improved since the takeover of Wesfarmers.

Comparing his situation to the heavily reported cuts made to B&Q staff wages, he added: "We had our [Sunday premiums] taken off us years ago and get paid no extra for a Sunday. We are also paid less than [B&Q] on an hourly basis!"

"I am paid £7.40 an hour, however some people are paid less. The way staffing is in Homebase at the moment is ridiculous, for example I have worked full time [between 30 - 39 hours] for the last 4 years however if I take a holiday I am only paid for 15 hours [as this is what's in my contract.]"

"This is made worse when the manager told me I was inflexible with the hours I could work which is not the case. And because of this I was not offered a larger contract when Bunnings took over."

When asked for his overall opinion of the new bosses, he responded: "I have to admit Bunnings have improved things such as stock and the cost of product which has improved significantly. It seems they are concentrating on cost more than service in stores and at head office."

"I am close to leaving a company I love due to bad management and bad leadership skills in store and higher."

When approached for comment, Bunnings gave DIYWeek.net the following statement: "We are sorry to hear one of our team members is unhappy. We always welcome feedback and would encourage them to speak to their store or area manager so we can address their individual situation.

"Additional Sunday pay was removed in September 2013 and although we are only a few months into the new ownership, we have already started to make changes for our team to reward them for effort and performance.

"In March, we increased pay for team members aged 18 and over to a minimum of £7.20 an hour. In addition to this, we are also making moves to create more permanency and will (where possible) start to broaden our team members' hours and lift contracted hours to provide a better overall income.

"We are committed to investing in creating a culture we want for our teams and a business we can be proud of."

I work for BQ and see the same thing at my store completely agree with your comments.I have lost over 2000 of my wages so BQ can " simplify" it's wage structure and pay the NLW to others. My CEO and all the directors and regional managers and store managers lost nothing

I totally agree this hard working fella is being treated no better than a slave employees deserve proper contracts and full time holiday pay.
This problem is because desperate people accept appalling contracts because they are desperate for money.
Large companies exploit people's misery and desperation.
Some of the comments criticising the said worker on here are a discrace, you try working on Zero hours contracts for 7.40 an hour.
The people doing the critising are the type of idiots signing these ridiculous contracts and accepting minimum wage. So wake up and get in the real world who the hell can afford to live on 7 quid odd an hour and not know what hours they are going to be working next week let alone afford a mortgage and raise a family.

It is unfair of some who comment here if you don't like it leave, why should people be forced out of their jobs because of greedy directors changing the lowest paid employees to ensure they are paid even less while taking ever bigger salaries themselves. It is often not easy to find another job paying the same and employers know this. If you have a mortgage and children you can't just take a pay cut. People are selfish who mock people for complaining, watch them change their tune if it happens to them

Welcome to capitalism, where "competition" means giving employees near-minimum wage, not enough money to pay for a mortgage, and income is made up by government benefits, and you can say goodbye to a basic pension. Company owners sidestep company tax, made up by the tax payer.

Everyone can express how they feel but if you are unhappy, fedup and importantly able to leave for another job then go do so. But I do like the last comment said get really p****d off by folk that think they are the best worker instore and how much money they bring in yadda yadda yadda. What about the guys that carry stuff out to cars, stock and keep the store tidy and full, the girls on the tills and returns desk putting up with rude nasty vile people either in
the store or on the phone or the lads in the garden centre who run around watering and tidying plants carrying bags of compost or gravel to the tills and then on to customers cars or vans. All these people matter, it's teams working together, not single minded me me me types

Another person how believes the world owes them a living , why don't they stop moaning and stop telling everyone how hard they work and how little every one else does and just leave .

I'm sorry but don't agree with the previous comment on consultants. I work in a large store and my personal sales amount to 800k a year+ vat, that's over 1 million in sales from a single person. (Other then the help from a small amount of advisors)

No other single role brings that sort of money into the store.

So basically this is a news article about an employee thinking he's been treated unfairly? Get real...they are a business. If you don't like it surely just move on???

Yes it's all true, some things are slightly better. The end of HD cards and furniture insurance targets and the bullying to meet these week after week. Prices are lower but some of the new stock is questionable and does not sell. There is also a big question mark over showrooms with the loss of the furniture section and no commitment being given to showroom staff or commission payments - if you want to cut costs what about the highly paid consultants and silly numbers of managers - team leaders without teams too. Also there is a story doing the rounds of ending overtime and everyone having to work at weekends?
