Council's home improvement scheme slammed for favouring B&Q

Published: 10 April 2012
A scheme for tenants of South Tyneside Homes has been criticised by independent DIY retailers in the area because the customers' £200 home improvement allowance is only valid at a B&Q store in South Shields.
Council's home improvement scheme slammed for favouring B&Q
Discussions are underway between South Tyneside Homes' director of investment Mark Whittle and representatives from B&Q to propose expanding the scheme to include smaller stores. The scheme has been running in conjunction with partner contractors Esh Property Services since January 2010 and has proven popular with many South Tyneside tenants.

Far less enthusiasm has come from local DIY retailers, however, who have reportedly labelled it "grossly unfair."

A B&Q spokesperson told DIY Week: "We are currently in discussions with the South Tyneside Homes regarding the scheme and welcome the review. We pitched for this business and were appointed as their chosen supplier.

"We have a long history supporting the social housing sector both around the UK and within the South Tyneside area, so this experience helps us provide the best schemes, products and deals to satisfy the community.

"As well as being the nation's largest home improvement centre, our ties within the local community in South Tyneside are strong; we trade locally, employ locally and work with local charities to add value to the community."
