Essential reading for retailers and suppliers in the home improvement market

Brits still love to garden

Published: 6 July 2011
When surveyed in spring, 76% of UK adults with access to a garden or allotment said they planned to plant or grow something in their garden this year.
Brits still love to garden
The figures come from the HTA spring 2011 Garden Intentions Survey, which also revealed that 50% of Brits planned to grow their own.

And it seems they kept their word, as the HTA Garden Retail Monitor revealed that trade was up 12% until the end of May, compared with the same period last year.

The garden retail industry is currently worth £4.6bn, with plants accounting for £1.7m of this. The value of non-plant categories is £2.9m.

HTA president Caroline Owen from Scotsdales Garden Centre said: "We continue to see people retreat to their gardens - to garden and relax and entertain. This in turn is driving more customers to garden centres with plant sales having been particularly string this year, as people look to bring colour into their gardens. Sales of garden furniture and barbecues are also encouraging - a further sign that many intend to enjoy their gardens as we move into summer."
