Amazon warehouse goes up in flames, two arrested

Published: 15 November 2016 - Jenny Wonnacott

Two people have been arrested after Amazon's major distribution centre in Rugeley went up in flames in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Up to 1,000 workers were evacuated from the building, but none were injured, according to the retail giant. Staffordshire police have since confirmed that they are treating the fire as arson.

A spokesperson said that a 19-year-old from Birmingham had been arrested on Sunday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The individual was bailed until February 2017. A further arrest was made on Monday of a 21-year-old from Wednesbury, who remains in custody.

An Amazon spokesperson said that it is normal for the company to have up to 1,000 people working in the building at any given time. He added that some would not have been able to work on Monday, but that the company was working on re-opening the entire centre again.

Amazon has said that the other UK distribution centres would be able to cover orders until the site was up and running again.
